As she developed herself creatively and intellectually, her fascination for human behaviour became a big part of her voice. In a constant search of deeper reflection on her stories, she studied philosophy at the University of Amsterdam, and soon after applied to the Netherlands Film Academy, where she was selected to study film directing.

SH_T HAPPENS
by Michaela Mihalyi, David Štumpf / Animation / Czech Republic (2019)
BEST ANIMATION
The caretaker exhausted by everything, his frustrated wife and one totally depressed deer. Their mutual despair leads them to absurd events, because… shit happens all the time.
SH_T HAPPENS is a contemporary adaptation of a well-known biblical story. We decided to play around with it, creating absurd settings for our characters. We based it on the idea of “what if?”. It felt very compelling for us to create the strange world of unexpected coincidences. We chose the narrative structure, based on our interpretation, that suits best for re-telling it in the most entertaining way. The visual of the film use a printmaking machine called risograph, which has lately been going through a renaissance in the graphic world. The risograph created a unique colourful direction for the film to complement the storytelling.
